"Yay! They're here!" A book about first contact that doesn't go exactly as planned.

"Exit 57" appearing in "Yay! There're Here!"

Posted on September 8, 2023February 17, 2024 by sgkubrak

One of my short stories, “Exit 57” is appearing in the great anthology “Yay! They’re Here!” by Dead Fish Books. I will let the editor, Helen Davis explain the content:

“The Aliens are coming! The Aliens are coming! O Happy Day!
And then…the course of First Contact never runs smooth.

We present to you a collection of stories from twenty authors around the world, stories of First Contact that start optimistically (for someone) but then, well, things happen. These stories range from hopeful to hilarious to horrifying. Some will make you laugh; others will make you cry. Some will leave you with the disquiet you can only get from a good horror story. First Contact, yay!”

It was an absolute pleasure working with Helen to get my short story included in the anthology. As the title suggests, “Exit 57” is about first contact and is a pivotal moment for the human species. Set in the near future when humanity has finally begun reversing the ravages of climate change, finally understood what it means to be one planet with a common future, and has embraced AI as our companions and not sentient adversaries, everything seems to be going well for us for a change… until it doesn’t.

This is one of the many stories that will be included in “Dreams of a Freezing Ocean: Volume 2: Dark Oceans” set for release Summer 2024.

“Yay! There’re Here!” is available on Amazon, get your copy today!
